Rider climbing a hill on an eBike

Same hill. Different arrival.

On a normal bike
Lycra & a shower
Specialist gear, a change of clothes in the bag, and arriving tired before the day has started.
On a LOCO eBike
Work clothes
Pedal assist does the heavy lifting up to 25 km/h. You arrive the way you left: fresh, and ready for the day.

How much help you get on a climb depends on the bike. Here's what to look for.

Four things to check before you buy

Torque gets the headlines, but it's the combination that gets you up the hill without the struggle.

Torque
The motor's pulling power, in Nm. Around 50 Nm handles most climbs; 75 Nm or a mid-drive for steep hills every day.
Gears
More gears, with low ones, let you keep a steady pedal on a steep pitch while the motor pulls. Look for 7 speeds or more.
Tyres
Wider tyres grip on wet and loose climbs. Smaller 20-inch wheels are quicker to get going on a slope.
Battery
Hills use more battery than the flat, and quoted ranges are at the lowest assist level. Leave plenty to spare.

Hills, answered

Do I need cycling gear or a shower?

No. Keep the assist up on the climb and you can ride in what you're wearing for the day. A rain jacket and mudguards take care of wet mornings.

How steep a hill can an eBike climb?

It comes down to torque, gears, tyres and the weight of you plus whatever you carry. Around 50 Nm handles most climbs; for steep hills every day, look for 75 Nm or a mid-drive, with low gears to match. Ask us in store about your hill.

Will hills drain the battery?

Climbing uses more battery than the flat, and quoted ranges are measured at the lowest assist level. Pick a battery with plenty to spare and you'll get through the week on a charge or two.

Do I still have to pedal?

Yes. Pedal assist adds power while you pedal, up to 25 km/h. Turn it up for the hill, down on the flat if you want the exercise.

Can I buy it through Cycle to Work?

Yes. eBikes up to €1,500 and cargo eBikes up to €3,000, saving up to 52% depending on your tax rate. Check with your employer.
