Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about buying an electric bike in Ireland.
No. EU-compliant electric bikes — 250W motor, 25 km/h maximum assist — are classified as bicycles under Irish law. No licence, road tax or insurance required. Cycle lanes, roads and paths are all open to you.
Manufacturer figures are tested on flat ground in warm weather at minimum assist. In real Irish conditions — headwinds, hills, cold mornings, stop-start traffic — expect 50–65% of the claimed figure. A bike claiming 100 km will realistically give 55–65 km in daily use.
You buy a bike through your employer and repay from pre-tax salary over up to 12 months. The saving equals your marginal tax rate — up to 52% for higher-rate taxpayers. The eBike allowance is up to €1,500, covering most bikes in our range in full. Helmets, locks and lights can be included too.
A torque sensor measures how hard you're pedalling and responds proportionally — it feels like a natural extension of your legs. A cadence sensor simply detects pedal rotation and fires a fixed power burst. You'll feel the difference from your very first pedal stroke.
Folding eBikes are generally accepted when folded and treated as luggage. Full-size eBikes are typically not permitted during peak hours. Always check current operator rules as these can change.
A typical eBike battery costs roughly €0.12–0.15 to fully charge at current Irish electricity rates. Even charging daily, total annual electricity costs are typically under €50.
Yes. All bikes in our range are water-resistant to at least IPX4, handling rain and road spray without issue. Fat-tyre bikes with disc brakes give the best wet-weather confidence on Irish roads.
Most eBike batteries are rated for 500–800 full charge cycles. At one charge per day that's 1.5–2+ years of daily commuting. Store at room temperature and avoid full discharge to extend battery life.
