Can an eScooter really get you up the hill?

Short answer: yes, if you pick the right one.

The real problem with hills

Most people who'd like to ride to work aren't put off by the hill. They're put off by what the hill does to them: arriving tired, needing sports gear, and needing a shower before they're fit to sit at a desk.

An eScooter takes that away completely. There's no pedalling: the motor does all of the climbing while you stand and steer, so you take the hill at a steady pace in normal clothes and arrive the way you left.

An eScooter doesn't just make the hill easier. It takes the Lycra and the shower out of the commute.

What gets you up the hill

It's never one number. These work together:

  • Motor power (W): the best single number for hills. Our hill picks run from 1000 W to 2000 W on a single motor.
  • Dual motors: one in each wheel, so the scooter pulls and pushes up the slope at once. KuKirin's G2 Master and G3 Pro are both dual motor.
  • Max climb (degrees): KuKirin states the steepest slope each model can climb. Treat it as a best case and leave headroom.
  • Battery: climbing uses more of it. We only quote realistic range, 55% of the brand's claim, so you know what to expect.
  • Tyres and suspension: wide off-road or tubeless tyres grip on wet and broken climbs; front and rear suspension keeps them on the ground.
  • Load: the more you weigh with your bag, the harder every one of the above has to work.

Carrying more? Pick a bigger motor

A work bag or a backpack is no problem for any scooter here. Every model takes up to 120 kg, you and your bag together, and a stronger motor keeps the climbs easy as you carry more.

  • Travelling light or with a backpack: the figures in the table are your guide.
  • A heavy work bag every day: go one step up in motor.
  • Closer to the 120 kg max load: dual motors are the comfortable choice.

How much do you need?

  • Gentle drags and bridges: the KuKirin G2 (800 W, up to 20°, £418) or G2 Max (1000 W, up to 22°).
  • A proper climb on the daily route: the KuKirin G4, with 2000 W and up to 30°.
  • Steep hills every day, or a heavy load: dual motors, with the G2 Master (up to 28°) or the G3 Pro (up to 32°).

These are rules of thumb for one rider. Your weight, the gradient and how much you carry all move the line, which is why we'd always choose a model with headroom over one that only just makes the stated angle.
